Nobody special. Nobody’s special in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. In Act two and three, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern represent the futility of identity. In Act 2, the player quotes, “Uncertainty is the normal state. You’re nobody special” (66) That’s just the way it is. He’s saying that you’re not supposed to be special: you should be confused about who you are. The King frequently confuses between them and they even receive the equal pay. Their existence is not special to anyone else even if they always argue about their identity. The only answer to the lack of identity is assumption. The Player believes “everything has to be taken on trust...[because] it’s the currency of living” (67). One must assume that he/she has a certain identity which they trust that it exists. Assumption, in other words, is the boat that guides our life’s decisions.
