One of these letters work to form a frame-in-frame narrative structure that creates an opaque layer between the narrator and the audience. However, the audience is befuddled: what is the purpose of having four letters that seem irrelevant to the story to come? The letters that discusses loneliness and venturing into untraveled territory only become more pertinent as Frankenstein story unfolds. 12/1

In Frankenstein, the first four letters and the preface I read weren't mainly about the story--it covered the intention of the writing and background of the narrator. The book starts with an exploration of the narrator and covers a lot of topics through his letters: loneliness, risks taken by the discovery of new knowledge, and many more. The letters are foreshadowing what's coming up in the plot.
