January 13
1. Correct these sentences.

In Frankenstein The first four letters and the preface I read weren't mainly about the story it covered the intention of the writing and background of the narrator the book starts with an exploration of the narrator and covers a lot of topics through his letters. For example loneliness risks taken by discovery of new knowledge, and etc it seems like the letters are foreshadowing whats coming up in the future of this book. -- Try for 3 sentences. There is a possibility of a colon AND a dash.

2. Discuss homework and sound.
answer sheet for sound exercises
3. Play with "Sound and Sense" by Alexander Pope
4. Choose one of the poems from the reading to explore further.

January 11, 2010
1.
2. Review vocab and punctuation. Write a sentence with a vocab word (that demonstrates the meaning of the word) and uses one of the punctuation methods discussed in class.
3. Book discussion (at beginning so I don't forget).
4. Discuss papers, enjambment,
5. Read poems.
HW: Read the given handouts (chapter), do 2-6 of the exercises, be able to explain reasons. Directions (since not included) In each of the paired quotations, the named poet wrote the version that more successfully adapts sound to sense. As specifically as possible, account for the superiority of the better version. You may do this by taking notes to the side. I expect participation in the discussion.
Example: Go forth -- and Virtue, ever in your sight, / Shall be your guide by day, your guard by night.
Or . . . Go forth -- and Virtue, ever in your sight, / Shall point your way by day and keep you safe at night.
(I actually think the first example is better due to the parallelism. However, the first is choppier, not as smooth when read aloud. The second has the emphasis on the verbs and maybe a stronger action of protection. Also, the internal rhyme of day and way helps. So though I thought the first (at first), the second upon further reflection works better according to the sound.
