Robert Mondavi's father, Cesare, came from Sassafarento near Ancona, on the Adriatic coast of the Marches -- not a particularly rich or fertile part of Italy even now, nor, except for Verdicchio, much of a wine-growing region. He came in 1883, when Cesare was born, the son of a large, simple family and possibly the first member of it to be able to sign his name. -- by Cyril Ray "Robert Mondavi of the Napa Valley"

November 10ish
-- The following sentence has a lengthy series joined by repeated possessive pronouns. Do you think the sentenceis effective or weak? What feature contributes strength or detracts from te rhetorical effectiveness?
- I guess the repeated possessive pronouns gives a sense of isolation of "each" inn. Without "its own" the sentence will sound more united and combined, with all the inns sharing common feature. Although the inns have same features--gardens, plants, library, and dining hall--it seems as if all inns are distinct from others. Each form its own community with very little or no communication.
"Walled off from the roaring traffic of the Embankment and Fleet Street and High Holborn, each Inn is a self-centered community with its own gardens, lush with cherry and magnolia, camelia, and crocus; its own library; its own dining hall; its labyrinth of walks and lawns; its blocks of offices and flats let out mostly to barristers." Robert Wernick, Smithsonian, May 1992

Write a short 4-5 sentence paragraph concerning your reading about Frankenstein. Include a colon.
- Frankenstein is delineated in a very unique style: epistolary format. The main point in this chapter was the understanding of human nature longing for companionship. The stranger agreed with Walton: friendship is not only desirable, but a possible acquisition.
1. Which of the following doesn't work? Why.
a. Bill played a musical number by Bach; Joan, Beethoven. b. Lou Williams was in for adultery; John Jones for gambling. (This one is missing comma between "Jones" and "for")
c. His mother told him to rent a car; his sister, to pack the suitcases.
2. Write your own original example.
This year I read Heart of Darkness; last year, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
3. Find one from something you have read (this may take a couple of weeks).
Prepositional repetition:
This nation is established for the people, by the people, of the people.
Dependent clauses:
Though happy she was, she couldn't overcome yesterday's grief.
Repetition:
If the end is to come, let the end define itself.
4 settings: Heart of Darkness
There are major four settings in the first section of the Heart of Darkness: Thames River, Nellie, Africa, and Congo River.
At Thames River the five people—narrator, Accountant, Lawyer, and Director—wait for the turn of tide in a small boat, Nellie, another setting that has many overlaps with Thames River. Thames River generally gives bigger image that includes at sometimes calmness, and at other times, a wave that will give a turn of a tide. River must flow continuously, representing process of life or an influx. Nellie, on the other hand, is stable and “rests” in the middle of the river. Nellie somehow casts a sense of “bubble of isolation.” Nellie is a separate part of the story, or Thames River, which includes another story told by Marlow.
Africa, a remote continent from England, is full of wilderness and darkness. On the other hand, Congo River, strangely, connects to Thames River through contiguous water pathway. While Marlow still feel comfortable back in England, he feels isolation and vagueness from the vastness of the jungle in beside the Congo River. In Africa, the role of river is quite similar to that of Thames River—it gives sense of isolation by just a sheer wall of body of water. Since the boat constantly moves, unlike Nellie, Marlow did not get to grasp the surroundings. He only “feels” fear, but is not at all fearful of unknown in the jungle because he knows that he is separated from the natives by the river.
Book Report (Crime and Punishment)
a. identify climax, major conflict, resolution or denoument, what type of plot (see page of literary terms)
The story was, I say, teleological, I knew that Raskolnikov will confess his sin as he mentioned about the human mistake in taking crime.
There were two--one small and one big--climaxes for this book: first, when Raskolnikov smashed Alyona Ivanovna's head; second, when Raskolnikov confessed to the police.
b. comment about setting
The setting must have taken place in late 1800's, when people are still starving and lead poor lives yet adore Russian palaces that are long since forgotten. People in the story are generally poor and the lives of people are monotonous.
c. identify one major symbol and one minor.
Raskolnikov: a person who is so self-centered that himself is a symbol of person who has strong ego.
Clothes that Razhumihin prepared for Raskolnikov: a new start and new life, which Raskolnikov strive to pursue after his murder.
d. discuss two characters. Label as round or flat, dynamic or static. Are they archetypal or foils?
Sonia: Static Character, she is introduced at the very beginning of the story and later turn out to go Siberia with Raskolnikov.
Razhumihin: Foil character, he is an old friend of Raskolnokov who generously takes care of him when he was bedridden. Razhumihin is rather optimistic than Raskolnikov and is very garrulous, unlike Raskolnikov, who thinks a lot and is reserved.
e. Open to the exact middle. What page? Write one paragraph about how this one page relates thematically, symbolically, or other (just not all plot) to the rest of the book.
pg. 191: This is the part where Raskolnikov alleges how man strives to live, even if he/she will be standing on a two-feet-spaced rock for eternity. Raskolnikov claims that such preference comes from the fact that man "is" a villain.
f. Tell me one thing other that really only someone who has read the book will get.
Raskolnikov is overly obsessed with what he had done, the murder, but Razhumikhin often makes fun of it, whether it was Dostoyevsky's purpose or not. For instance, Razhumikhin says, "I'm certain that no one would give so much as one baked onion for me, entrails and all, and even then only if you were thrown in as well," "Well, I'd only give one for you."

Here I sit down and enjoy my sushi. Let it loiter in my mouth before it follows through my digestive linings. The chef, who has been making sushi for couple decades, said that this was the optimum taste that can be derived from such fresh tuna. The controversy of whether such unique taste of tuna comes from the quality of tuna or from chef’s skill still perpetrates. The latter is most likely.

: This blog isn't that long nor short. It seems like the blog covers broad topics about physics, but briefly. I felt like I was reading trivial physics articles. This blog is great because I don't need to read and think for many hours only to find the article not worth reading. Since each post is about a paragraph long, I can just read what I like. Also, the author wrote something over 1000 posts so far.
Find a blog that discusses a topic in-depth in some way that you are interested in. : I watch Discovery channel everyday, but the only thing that don't like about it is that they play reruns too much. I found this daily blog which posts articles daily. As I've read through, I found that the author posts multiple articles per day. Boredom would be a petty complaint if I were to subscribe to this blog. And also, the blog talks about some of my interests: science and galaxies. I wanted to find a blog about star wars or other sci-fi movies, but soon I figured out that talking about fictions would have limits.
