By reading this blog, I could immediately find out what sort of person the author is. It shows her writing skills, her character, her warm heart and experiences in life. If I was a college admissions officer, I would favor this essay because it shows all about the student in just an essay.

The blog has heart. From reading the blog, we can feel what he feels for his uncle. We feel as if we should take his uncle to trip as well. The blog also keeps us interested. Even if it has heart, if it is boring, it is not a good blog. However this blog is fast-paced and engrossing. Lastly, it is written well. Its writing style aids the heart and interest of the blog and makes the blog powerful.

VOCAB!
Gambit- any maneuver by which one seeks to gain an advantage.
The Fly was a very confusing story. Although the details and descriptions were straight forward, the theme of the story was far from easy to grasp. When Old Woodifield came to the Boss's office, the Boss did the favor of offering Woodifield some liquor. As I was reading, I wondered if it was just an act of kindness or a gambit. Did the boss want to gain the trust or liking of Old Woodifield? Also, the fly is a simulacrum of the Boss's late son; the boss exhilarates at the survival of the fly, but despairs at its death, just as if it were his own son.

Inveterate-firmly established by long continuance, as a disease, habit, practice, feeling, etc.; chronic.
The cat had already become an inveterate fish thief.

Pinguid-fat; oily
The pinguid freshman had already become the simulacrum of Kang Ho Dong.

Teleological-the belief that purpose and design are a part of or are apparent in nature,
The happy ending story was a teleological story because it had a belief that all stories has a happy ending, as long as it is cut in the right place. All endings in the story lead to the same happy ending.

Sophism- any false argument; fallacy.
In this world, if any object that is not "the one" is a sophism. However, in Tlon, a sophism is reality, because hronirs exist. Hronirs are somewhat similar to simulacrums of the real object, but since they are not actually the real object, they are a sophism. As simulacrums are, however, the hronir becomes real-as real-as the original object, such that 3rd, 4th and even 11th hronirs form.

Vocab
The boston common is a public area in downtown. Boston is the main setting for the short story the patriot, which is about a man who argues to such an extent that it became a sophism.

Endemic- natural to or characteristic of a specific people or place; native; indigenous
  • The endemic seculararity of America caused the 9/11 incident
  • Gregor's transformation may be a sign of homosexuality or masturbation
  • Gregor's transformation is related to 9/11 in that secular groups and Gregor both become enemies overnight
  • There are some subject teachers cannot openly teach that comes out in metamorphosis
  • metamorphosis talks about many suppressed groups

Castration- to deprive of strength, power, or efficiency; weaken, to remove the testes of; emasculate; geld
The lack of male genitals in mothers or women in general is a symbol of castration to a male child, because he sees his mother as not different but lacking. The article claims that the overpowering women in wrestling is uncomfortable to men because it is a symbol of "castration." Nevertheless, it is queer because men are the majority of viewers in professional wrestling.
Inculcate- to implant by repeated statement or admonition; teach persistently and earnestly
The ancient sports visual rhetoric inculcated the male dominance to society by continually displaying the males as powerful.
The meal comprises two somewhat different main dishes. The latter emphasizes the importance of visual pleasure, almost as brilliant as the dish presented in the cover page of Cook America. In cooking practices, the appearance of the meal is all-powerful. It is uncommon for main dishes to be unappealing. Unbelievably, the man places himself in front of the first dish. The first meal is less brilliant than the second one. The chef watches in disbelief at the blasphemous action of the man. The daring man applies the first meal to his mouth. He has failed. Its appearance and taste is both less brilliant.

Epicurean- fond of or adapted to luxury or indulgence in sensual pleasures; having luxurious tastes or habits, esp. in eating and drinking.

Iniquity-a violation of right or duty; wicked act; sin.

Diaphanous-very sheer and light; almost completely transparent or translucent.

Rapacious-inordinately greedy; predatory; extortionate

mizzen-noting a sail, yard, boom, etc., or any rigging belonging to a mizzen lower mast or to some upper mast of a mizzenmast

veneration- respect

varnished- to give an improved appearance to; adorn.

sepulchre- a tomb, grave, or burial place

Emissary-a representative sent on a mission or errand

Cipher-to calculate numerically; figure.
The emissary sent to cipher the meaning of mysterious signs in the sepulchre was eventually murdered. The mysterious signs were a scheme by the rapacious killer who wished to lead people who wish to cipher it to the grave to murder them.

Ordinary People by Judith Guest
  • a. identify climax, major conflict, resolution or denoument, what type of plot (see page of literary terms)
    • The climax is when Kate dies and Conrad falls into despair and panic. The major conflict is the conflict between Conrad's wanting to be sane and part of the normal society and his incapability to forgive himself. The resolution is when Con goes and talks to his Berger after Kate's death, confesses all of his previous feelings, and finally forgives himself for the death of his brother. The plot is man in conflict with himself(Conrad against Conrad).
  • b. comment about setting
    • The setting is set in the winter of Michigan. It is cold and often snows. It is modern day USA and most of the story takes place in the school, the home, or areas around these places.
  • c. identify one major symbol and one minor.
    • Kate, Con's friend from the mental hospital who seemed to get much better, is a major symbol of hope to Conrad, because she represents the ability to heal from a terrible mental state. So when she dies, it feels like all hope is gone for Conrad because she was his symbol of healing.
    • Lazenby, Con's friend who is always faithful to Con, is a minor symbol of sanity for Con. He keeps rejecting Lazenby when he is sick, but when he gets better and heals in the end, he goes and befriends Lazenby again, symbolizing Conrad's achievement of sanity.
  • d. discuss two characters. Label as round or flat, dynamic or static. Are they archetypal or foils?
    • Stillman is flat and static, and he is a foil character. He is flat because he is a bully and a jock that does not show any other emotion or human characteristic for that matter. He always acts the same way the reader expects him to, and does not change at all up until his last appearance when he gets beat up by Conrad. He is a foil because he always is with the swim team and differs so much from the nice and docile Conrad, that he makes Conrad's character stand out more. He also is so different from Lazenby that he makes Lazenby look even more nicer and kind.
    • Beth is round and static. She is round in that she shows the characteristic of a superficial woman who is self-centered and very concerned about what others feel about her, while being a person who is afflicted inside from her issues unlike her outside cover. Although she is round, she does not change from the beginning of the story. She never takes the time to change herself or learn something new about her, so she is a static character. She is a foil because she is very different from the seemingly insecure and desperate Conrad and makes his dynamic characteristics stand out even more.
  • e. Open to the exact middle. What page? Write one paragraph about how this one page relates thematically, symbolically, or other (just not all plot) to the rest of the book.
    • Page 111. In page 111, Conrad's family is at home celebrating Christmas together. In this scene Con and Beth shout at each other for each other's faults and the hidden conflict between them is put into action. It shows the true feelings Conrad and Beth had for each other(which is disappointment and anger) and it shows that Beth is not a perfect being as previously portrayed. This scene is representative thematically of the of the whole novel. Ordinary People focuses on the theme that everyday people suffer from their own insecurity and problems with their minds. Conrad is known to be a mentally unstable character. However, Beth seems like the one that would be least likely to be infected with issues of the mind. In this scene, as Beth is afflicted with problems of her own, showing the theme that everyone is afflicted and not one person can escape from this aspect of human nature. The theme is reinforced along the way with many others suffering from mental instability, and this is one case of those examples.
  • f. Tell me one thing other that really only someone who has read the book will get.
    • Conrad is unlucky. No one in the story, or the world for that matter, is completely free of problems. Even those who seem to be completely normal or even those who look down on Con for being a hospitalized person are all cursed with the same issues of insecurity and desperateness. Conrad is just unlucky because he was put in the hospital for showing others his true feelings and problems. In the book, one could pick out any character and he or she would be suffering mental issues, but those characters are not too different from us and the people surrounding us. So, the book shows that 'ordinary people' are people like Con who have problems and try to figure out how to solve those problems.

Parallelism-
Before death, before corruption, and before illness, Kurts was indeed a universal genius.

Repetition
I ate the cake while I did homework so I saved time.
Kurtz was powerful, powerful in his voice, powerful in his authority, and powerful in his goals.

1. Which of the following doesn't work? Why.
a. Bill played a musical number by Bach; Joan, Beethoven.
b. Lou Williams was in for adultery; John Jones for gambling.
c. His mother told him to rent a car; his sister, to pack the suitcases.
B because it isn't just a subject and object in the second part; there is a preposition in it as well. So it does not work.

2. Write your own original example.
Japan has advanced technology; India, good food.

3. Find one from something you have read (this may take a couple of weeks).

Write a short 4-5 sentence paragraph concerning your reading about Frankenstein. Include a colon.
1. Robert Walton encounters an unexpected guest in Russia: The man on the sled.
2. We do not know the feelings of Margaret: Her responses are not shown.
3. Due to Robert's kindness, the visitor gives him a present: his tale of despair.
4. The guest is severely shocked by the shipmate's words: another man passed by.
5. The guest is very ambiguous in his feelings: He is delightful at times, and dreadful at others.

-- The following sentence has a lengthy series joined by repeated possessive pronouns. Do you think the sentences effective or weak? What feature contributes strength or detracts from the rhetorical effectiveness?

"Walled off from the roaring traffic of the Embankment and Fleet Street and High Holborn, each Inn is a self-centered community with its own gardens, lush with cherry and magnolia, camelia, and crocus; its own library; its own dining hall; its labyrinth of walks and lawns; its blocks of offices and flats let out mostly to barristers." Robert Wernick, Smithsonian, May 1992

I believe the sentence is weak. In the beginning, it starts out effectively because it portrays the mood of isolation with the periodic sentence structure. However, as he starts to put the repeated sections in, he changes from commas to semicolons; I know that it is because he starts with gardens and changes to what the building has, but it is a bit confusing to the reader. It would have been more effective and powerful had he put periods instead of semicolons.

EXERCISE -- Copy and paste this entire exercise into your own page. Write your answers in a different color or font. We will chose two people's in class to go over.
1. Look carefully at the following sentence. Does it work? If so, why? If not, where can the sentence be broken into two or shorter ones that are not overwhelming.
Robert Mondavi's father, Cesare, came from Sassafarento near Ancona, on the Adriatic coast of the Marches -- not a particularly rich or fertile part of Italy even now, nor, except for Verdicchio, much of a wine-growing region, and a good deal less so, no doubt, in 1883, when Cesare was born, the son of a large, simple family and possibly the first member of it, I have read somewhere, to be able to sign his name. -- by Cyril Ray "Robert Mondavi of the Napa Valley"
There are some grammar mistakes like nor, and it is a run on. However, it sounds as if he is speaking, and that works. However, if it was me, I would have it like this.
Robert Mondavi's father, Cesare, came from Sassafarento near Ancona, on the Adriatic coast of the Marches -- not a particularly rich or fertile part of Italy even now, and, except for Verdicchio, much of a wine-growing region. And it was a good deal less so, no doubt, in 1883, when Cesare was born, the son of a large, simple family and possibly the first member of it--I have read somewhere--to be able to sign his name.

2. Does this sentence work? If so, why? If not, please correct. The typical teenage user of snuff is white, active, and athletic, and subjected to very heavy peer pressure.
It doesn't because there are two ands during commas. It should be:
The typical teenage user of snuff is white, active, and athletic, subjected to very heavy peer pressure.

3. Same instructions -- The children gathered around the clown wishing for a balloon, angling for a smile, bowing before the childhood consumerism.
Yes because it has its own rhythm as the three come without conjunctions.

BOOK REPORT:
1. Both stories have a dead child and a couple who tries hard to overcome the memory of the child through internal struggles.
2. Both books are set Michigan and have at least two characters who go to Michigan University.
3. Both stories have a son who is in High school, in conflict with his parents, and going through puberty.
4. Both have a husband or wife who cheats on their lover.
5. Both stories have the main characters as round characters who develop and change throughout the story. Most main characters have more than one side to them, and rarely are flat.

SENTENCE FOR FINALS:::
I will have you know that I am not--in any shape or form--pinguid!

In Frankenstein, the first four letters and the preface I read weren't mainly about the story it covered the intention of the writing and background of the narrator the book starts with an exploration of the narrator and covers a lot of topics through his letters: for example, loneliness risks taken by discovery of new knowledge, and etc. It seems like the letters are foreshadowing what's coming up in the future of this book. -- Try for 3 sentences. There is a possibility of a colon AND a dash.
