The blogger is the owner of this brand. The blog mainly deals with his life, but also has a lot of information related to the brand. There are videos, pictures, wall papers, information for new products, and etc. He talks about things like music, the town he lives, people he knows, and other things a typical person can easily talk about. It was very interesting to see an owner of such a company to share his personal life with the public.
The Fly
The Fly is a metaphorical story, using the struggle of the fly to represent the struggle of the boss who had to overcome his son's death. The boss and the old man didn't meet to discuss about their the boss's son, but the picture on the boss's desk plays the role of a gambit and starts the whole conversation. The boss must've faced an exigency in his mind. His loss almost drove him to the verge of a mental break down. It was too much for him.
Omelas Tone Change
The tone of the story starts with joy, talking about festivals and all the positive, happy aspects of Omelas. The tone is casual and colloquial. But as it develops, the writer starts to reveal the dark side of the society, talking in the tone of sympathy. The story flows to a totally different side of the Omelas society. The author keeps her critical and sympathetic tone to the end. The sudden twist was quite surprising.
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
a. identify climax, major conflict, resolution or denoument, what type of plot (see page of literary terms)
- Climax seems like when the "civilized" people visit John, the "savage", after watching a feely based on his action of whipping himself then having an orgy all together. This leads to John killing himself after waking up from a load of soma.
- The major conflict through out the book is John,Bernard, Helmholtz, and the rest of the society, which view everything in a different way and can't understand each other.
- The resolution for the conflicts with the society is Bernard and Helmholtz leaving to the islands and John having his own place to live his "savage" life.
- I think it's a chronological plot
b. comment about setting
- Considering the period the book was written, I think it's sensational to come up with such a plot. It resembles the society nowadays a bit and reflects what some guess will be the future. It was the extreme version of the world we're living right now.
c. identify one major symbol and one minor.
- The alphabets determining the level of each human being seemed to symbolize the society we're living in, the tendency to divide people depending on their career or ability. It's an extreme version of the division, actually giving each level a specific role to accomplish based on their ability and knowledge determined before their birth.
- Soma seems to be a symbol of all the sinful fantasies us human beings have in the world right now. For example, easy sex and getting high by drugs. Both of these are done easily in the world portrayed in the book since Soma is legal and used everyday.
d. discuss two characters. Label as round or flat, dynamic or static. Are they archetypal or foils?
John- round, static, foil
John remains "savage" the whole time in the book. He's round since I can actually tell that he has feelings, knowledge, and emotion. He's not uniformed like the others. He has values that don't match with the others in the society, but keeps his ideas until he dies. We can tell how the "civilized" people are weird through his acts and conflicts.
Lenina- round, static, archetypal
Although Lenina was a typical citizen of the society, I thought she was round because there are scenes where I observed her values and ideas hesitating due to John. She starts having feelings towards one man, but still doesn't understand John's statements regarding "parents" and etc. She takes soma every time she feels like, and has sex with various men.
e. Open to the exact middle. What page? Write one paragraph about how this one page relates thematically, symbolically,or other (just not all plot) to the rest of the book.
page 132.
This is the scene when John comes back home and sees Pope and his mom Linda lying down after having sex. He is mad to see such a scene in a daily basis. Linda has sex with everyone in the town which is why all the women hate her and the people don't accept John. This, however, is a significant scene because something like that can't happen in the civilized world since there's no such thing as parents and there's no reason to get mad to see people having sex, there's no such feeling as jealousy or love. Pope is also a significant figure since he's the one who gave Shakspeare books to John, which makes "savage".
