I. Introduction
A. Thesis
Victor is not the only one to blame for the misfortunes in the novel Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley. The female characters, such as Elizabeth and Safie, are a reflection of Pandora, the first woman in greek mythology; they not only serve as an obstacle of Victor’s creation of a female version of the creature but are the ones to reveal, to the monster, love and belongingness in the first place.
B. Brief accounting of female characters
II. The Pandora inside the female characters
A. Sub point: Female characters are all attractive, never old nor uneducated.
1. Evidence 1: the death of Victor’s mother, no old women = Pandora: first mortal being.
2. always young, attractive and educated: Elizabeth, Justine
3. Evidence 2 with critic: Margaret Homans "Bearing Demons: Frankenstein's Circumvention of the Maternal,"
B. Sub point: Pandora releases evilness, the monster’s desire for women contribute to the monster’s demand on Victor.
1. Evidence: The love between Safie and the French boy teaches the monster about companionship..
2. Analysis: When the box was opened, ‘hope’ came out with all the evil human qualities. Thus, the monster had ‘hope’ or trust to his creator that he would create his companion...?
Connection to Mary Shelley’s biography
A. Sub point: Mary Shelley’s self-identity as a woman
1. parental influence on her view of women
= another critique: Knoepflmacher
2. society during her lifetime
B. Sup point: Representative characters
story competition
IV. Incorporation of the two topics
*A. Sub point with possible twist :)
