I. Introduction
*A. Thesis: Frankenstein’s monster, through his gain of knowledge and witness of Victor’s authority, reaches self-awareness and independence.
II. Point One: The monster starts to gain knowledge after learning to speak.
*A. Sub point: Learns how to speak.
*1. Evidence 1: Through the hole, the monster watches the family and starts relating objects with the words with right meanings.
*2. Evidence 2 with critic: ???
*B. Sub point: Picks up knowledge from books he finds outside.
*1. Evidence: Reads books: learns to read and absorbs the info/knowledge as well.
*2. Analysis: Frederick Douglass – learning to read was the “spark”.
III. Point Two: the monster’s self-pity; Paradise Lost and other books he reads lead him to self-realization.
*A. Not only does he learn to read, but he also learns his own situations because he relates/identifies himself with the books he reads.
*1. Evidence 1: quotes from the book
*2. Analysis: Becomes an emotional being, with heart and the sense of morality.
*B. Starts to sympathize with others, but not getting the same attention/love back from other people.
*1. Evidence: De Laceys – the monster helps them gather crops, etc. but the son drives the monster away from the village.
*2. Abandonment, rejection; the monster feels isolated after his unsuccessful attempt to be accepted by the family.
IV. Point Three: Lack of trust, no more dependence; independence; Victor’s authority and extensive knowledge motivate the monster to become like Victor.
A. Becomes aware of his origin.
Evidence: Finds Victor’s journals; anger toward Victor for creating him so ugly and abandoning it right away.
Analysis: Frederick Douglass – unjust treatment of African American slaves; abuse.
The monster wants to be like Victor and it tries to prove itself to the world.
Evidence: revenge; female monster.
Analysis: Frederick Douglass – with knowledge, plans to escape: SUCCEED (becomes like the white slave owner); the monster (why doesn’t he just go ahead and create his female companion right away with Victor’s journals?): NO RESPONSIBILITY; FAILS (the monster can’t be like Victor)
