The Bible as Literature: The Book of Job
AP English

How do you cite a quotation from the Bible? Please don’t forget that OWL Purdue is the preferred grammar source for KIS.
In order to cite a quotation from the Bible, we have to make clear which Bible we’re using (by underlining or italicizing the title), because each version differs in translation. The quote should be followed by the name of the book (without italics or underlining), chapter, and verse:
Ezekiel saw "what seemed to be four living creatures," each with faces of a man, a lion, an ox, and an eagle (New Jerusalem Bible, Ezek. 1.5-10).
When is the word bible capitalized and when is it not?
We capitalize the word when it is used as or referred as the sacred book, for instance:
· Bible · Scriptures · Word of God · Holy Bible · Old Testament · New Testament · Gospels · Ten Commandments · Lord’s Prayer · Gospels · Gospel of Luke · King James Version · New International Version
The “bible” when not capitalized can refer to a number of authoritative books in various fields, and so the reference to the Holy Bible as a proper noun should be capitalized in its adjectival form.
Write the MLA citation for the Bible.
